MojoPlay: what it solved and how
A music app built around listening with people: synced Listen Together sessions, mood-based discovery and offline downloads.
The thinking
One decision worth defending
- 01
Problem
Most music apps treat listening as a solo act and add sharing as a link you send, which says what you are playing but not that you are listening together.
- 02
Decision
Make a shared listening session a first-class feature: play, pause and seek stay in sync for everyone in the session over a live socket connection.
- 03
Why it holds
A link is a message. A synced session is an experience, and it only works if sync sits at the core of the player instead of being bolted on after the player is done.
What it includes
Built
- Listen Together sessions with real-time synced play, pause and seek
- Mood-based discovery next to algorithmic quick picks
- Background playback with lock-screen controls, a mini-player and a fullscreen player coloured from the album art
- Offline downloads and a local cache
If one feature is the reason a product exists, build the core around it from the first week. Retrofitting real-time sync into a finished player is far harder.
