Hiring where you are: what the usual advice leaves out

Most advice about hiring a developer is written as if every reader were in a large metro with hundreds of agencies within reach. If you are building a business in Chhattisgarh, that is not your situation, and some of that advice does not fit. This page covers what changes for a buyer in the state, and what does not. It is written by a developer who has delivered work in Chhattisgarh and who, for that reason, cannot claim to be neutral. I have tried to give advice that would hold if you hired someone else.

The state is home to a growing set of businesses in retail, automobiles, real estate, agriculture, trading, steel and power, and to a young population comfortable with phones. The demand for software is real, and the local supply of experienced product developers is thinner than in the big tech cities. That is the setting you are making a decision in.

Local, remote or a mix

The first decision is whether you want your developer in the same city. There are real advantages to proximity. You can meet in person, watch a process in your shop, and build trust faster face to face. For a project that depends on understanding a physical business, those benefits are significant.

There are also real costs. The pool of experienced developers in a single smaller city is limited, and restricting yourself to it may mean accepting less experience or less choice. A remote developer with the right proof of work can be a better choice than a local one without it.

The pattern that works best is a mix. Hold the scope workshop in person, in Raipur or Bilaspur or wherever you are, so that your processes are understood properly. Then run the build with a weekly demo and a shared task board. You get proximity where it matters and wide choice where it does not.

Language, users and the realities of connectivity

Many of your users will prefer Hindi, and some will be most comfortable in Chhattisgarhi. An interface that is English-only will exclude people you want as customers. Decide early whether Hindi is needed at launch, because retrofitting a second language into a finished app is considerably more work than designing for it.

Connectivity varies, and outside the larger cities signal can be patchy. For apps used in shops, in the field or in transit, ask how the app behaves with a poor or absent connection. An app designed to work offline and to sync later is a different design from one that assumes a constant connection.

Payments are mostly UPI, which is a good thing for developers: a well-understood integration. Cash still plays a part in many businesses, so if your customers pay in cash, the system should record it properly.

Proof from the state

I delivered a multi-tenant platform for a family-run conglomerate in Chhattisgarh, with five brands across automobile, retail and real estate and eight outlets. Lead-to-delivery time came down from about two weeks to about four days, as reported by the client. The case study describes the decisions behind it.

I mention it because it is the kind of evidence you should ask any developer for: work done for a real business in your region, with something measurable. If someone cannot show you something similar, ask what they would do differently for that reason.

What a fair quote looks like here

A fair quote in Chhattisgarh looks the same as one anywhere: a written scope, a list of what is not included, milestones you can test, a rule for handling changes, and ownership of the code and accounts in your name. The place does not lower the standard.

Prices differ between vendors and between cities, and I do not give a single figure, because it would be misleading. Use the cost calculators on this site to put your own assumptions in, and compare what you are quoted by local studios, remote freelancers and agencies on the same arithmetic.

Be sceptical of a quote that is much lower than all the others, and of one much higher. Ask each to explain the assumptions behind the figure.

Checks that matter more in a smaller market

In a smaller market, reputation travels. That is a help, because you can ask around. It is also a risk, because people are reluctant to say anything negative about someone they will meet again. Ask specifically about experience of delivery and communication, not whether the person is likeable.

Be careful of a vendor who is the only one anyone mentions. Having a single local option is a reason for more checks, not fewer. Open their shipped work on your phone, speak to a past client, and insist on the repository and accounts being in your name.

If you are choosing between a local and a remote developer who both pass the checks, choose whichever you find easier to talk to. The relationship is the part you will feel every week.

Where software helps most in the state's businesses

Chhattisgarh's economy has particular strengths, and the software that pays back fastest follows them. Trading and distribution businesses benefit from clean order, stock and payment tracking, particularly across multiple outlets. Retail and automobile dealerships gain from linking enquiries to deliveries and from seeing every outlet in one place, as in the conglomerate project above. Agriculture-linked businesses can benefit from tools for procurement, records and logistics.

Real estate, healthcare, education and local services have a different pattern: appointments, bookings, follow-ups and payments, handled across phone and WhatsApp today. A simple system that turns scattered messages into one queue is often the first win, and it is far smaller than people expect.

In each of these, the same advice applies. Start with the single process that causes the most waiting or loss, build the smallest software that fixes it, and expand from the results.

A first project that rarely disappoints

If you are unsure where to begin, a good first project is to put one important flow, such as taking and tracking orders or bookings, into a simple system your staff use every day. It should have one or two user roles and no more than a few screens. It should be deployable quickly, so that real use begins within weeks and you learn what to improve.

Resist the pull toward a large platform that will do everything. Those projects take long, cost much and are hard to change. Small systems that are used daily teach you what the bigger one should be.

Questions I am asked by buyers in the state

Do I have to hire someone in Chhattisgarh?

No. Hire on evidence. Local helps for projects that depend on watching a physical process, and many good projects run with a remote developer and a weekly demo.

Will an app in Hindi cost much more?

It adds work, mostly in design and testing, but far less than adding it later. Decide before the build starts.

Can the app work without a signal?

Yes, if it is designed for it. Tell the developer that offline use matters in the first conversation.

Is a small first version worth it?

Usually the best first step. It teaches you what to build next, at a fraction of the cost of a large platform.

A note on cities and towns

Chhattisgarh has several centres: Raipur, the capital, and Bilaspur, Bhilai-Durg, Korba and Raigarh among others. I have written a page for Raipur and will add others only when there is something real to say about them, not to cover every name. A page that repeats the same text with a different city is of no use to you.

If you are in one of the other cities, the guidance here applies. If you want to talk it through, message me, and I will tell you honestly whether I am the right person.

What changes here

Four things worth knowing

01

Meet once, build remotely

A face-to-face scope workshop in Raipur or Bilaspur settles most misunderstandings. After that, a weekly demo works as well as sitting in the same room.

02

Language in the product

Many users will prefer Hindi. Decide early whether the interface needs Hindi, and whether to keep other languages for later, because retrofitting is costly.

03

Payments and connectivity

UPI is the default expectation. Outside the big cities, signal can be patchy, so ask about offline behaviour for any app used in the field.

04

Fewer local options, same standards

A smaller local market does not lower the bar. Run the same checks on a local studio as you would on a Bengaluru agency.
